Maestro Paolo
A Life Dedicated to Filipino Martial Arts and De Campo 1-2-3 Original
Paolo Pagaling: Guiding the Future of De Campo 1-2-3 Original
For several decades, Paolo Pagaling has immersed himself in the rich tradition of Filipino Martial Arts. Beginning his journey as a passionate student, he has grown into a dedicated instructor and advocate of the art, most notably as the Training Director for the De Campo 1-2-3 Original system. His deep respect for his mentors and his firm commitment to authentic training define his work.
A Personal Martial Journey
Paolo’s path in martial arts is personal, shaped by a desire to understand combat’s nuances and to honor the lineage of his instructors. His training spanned multiple systems, but his encounter with the De Campo 1-2-3 Original system founded by Grandmaster Jose Caballero had a defining impact. De Campo’s direct and efficient techniques matched his philosophy of simplicity, precision, and effectiveness.
Recognition and Teaching Philosophy
As a recognized Magtutudlo of De Campo, Paolo has preserved the legacy while advancing its reach. He teaches both in-person and online, always focusing on principles rather than rote techniques. His aim is for each student to internalize the underlying mechanics so that the art becomes adaptive and meaningful in each individual’s journey.
Launching the De Campo 123 Master Class
Paolo’s most recent and ambitious project is the De Campo 123 Master Class. This is not merely a course. It is a structured, principle-based curriculum designed to take practitioners from foundational mastery through advanced double-stick and combination work. Through this Master Class, Paolo provides access to decades of distilled insight, making the full De Campo system more accessible than ever.
Drawing from his own teaching experience and the demands of modern students, the Master Class is constructed in two parts: De Campo 101 (the foundation) and De Campo 123 (advanced applications). Students who enroll step into a clear path from basic mechanics and footwork to complex double-stick patterns, strategic transitions, and deeper comprehension of De Campo’s layered structure.
Blending Tradition and Digital Reach
Paolo is known for bridging tradition with modern technology. The Master Class builds on his earlier work offering online lessons and resources so that distance is not a barrier to serious study. He emphasizes that even in virtual sessions, the structure, discipline, and precision of training remain rigorous and effective.
Global Vision and Community Growth
Beyond individual instruction, Paolo is building a global community around De Campo. He leads seminars and summit events such as the Centennial summit in Tagaytay, and supports remote groups developing under his guidance. His work ensures that De Campo’s reach is no longer confined by geography.
Training Under Masters and Philosophical Roots
In his continued path, Paolo trains under respected masters such as Grandmaster Boy Ceniza in Baraw Sugbo and Mang Yuli in the Ilustrisimo system. Mang Yuli’s principle that “the most basic is the most advanced” has deeply shaped Paolo’s teaching. It reminds him that mastery begins with fundamentals no matter how advanced one becomes.
Humility, Philosophy and Lifelong Learning
What distinguishes Paolo is his humility and acknowledgment that FMA is a lifelong pursuit. He teaches not for ranks or titles but to pass on what was entrusted to him. He encourages students to embody the art’s principles, not just learn its techniques.
A Long Way Still To Go
Though much has been achieved, Paolo continues to evolve as both teacher and student. The De Campo 123 Master Class stands as a current milestone, not a destination. As the art grows, he remains committed to preserving its core principles while leveraging modern tools to expand access. His story is one of perseverance, innovation, and fidelity to the art.
